Nelda Pieper is a remarkable artist, self taught. Nelda, a native Texan, received her first set of paints when she was ten, giving her first "masterpiece" to her beloved grandma who was her greatest supporter. As a young woman, her genuine gift to portray the pure innocence in children led to family and friends requesting portraits of their children. Though Nelda gives credit, not to herself, but to artists and others that have gone before, it is Nelda’s unique passion and compassion that guides her brush to create beauty on canvas that is unmatched.

Nelda is best known for her paintings of children. Nelda loves to paint children, "....because they are so important and of such innocent grace." In her children’s series Nelda’s paintings reveal to us the “secret”, the very essence and magic of being a child. Nelda's ability to interpret their pure beauty and innocence is absolute. In this series Nelda provides us with more than a glimpse into their world, she creates for us a wonderland, taking us on a remarkable journey back to our own childhood and fond memories where colors are brighter and the smallest detail more exciting. |

Nelda’s remarkable gift is further demonstrated in her paintings of the Tarahumara Indians. An anthropologist, having lived among this noble tribe, was keenly aware of Nelda’s unique ability to capture the soulful essence in children and adults of all ages and cultures. He knew she would be the only artist capable of capturing the unique beauty of the Tarahumara tribe. Working from his photographs and sketches Nelda created her Tarahumara Series.
In this series Nelda masterfully conveys to us their soulful beauty, dignity and dedication to tradition and family as this tribe struggled to preserve their dignity and tradition despite the intrusion of advancing modern day traditions and technologies as well as famines and droughts. Nelda’s paintings brought to life what photographs and sketches could not, successfully preserving the magnificence of their culture.
More than one thousand of her paintings and portraits are included in private, corporate and museum collections worldwide. Her portraits of adults have immortalized the noblest features of subjects in hundreds of locales for more than four decades.
